Cradle Hill Community Primary School

RE

Intent

Religious education gives our pupils an opportunity to explore matters of religions and non-religious beliefs, to find out what matters most to people in a wide range of traditions represented in our county and beyond, and to discern what is of value for themselves as they develop their own ideas and ways of living.

 At Cradle Hill, we aim for children to:

  • Make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs.
  • Understand the impact and significance of religious and non-religious beliefs.
  • Make connections between religious and non-religious beliefs, concepts, practices and ideas studied.
  • Learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ.
  • Understanding all of this will help our children to lead full, rounded lives.

Implementation

The religious education curriculum forms an important part of our school’s spiritual, moral and social teaching. It also promotes education for citizenship. Our school RE curriculum is based on the East Sussex Agreed Syllabus 2022, and it meets all the requirements set out in that document.

We plan our RE curriculum in accordance with the East Sussex Agreed Syllabus (2022). We ensure that the topics studied in RE build on prior learning. We offer opportunities for children of all abilities to develop their skills and knowledge in each unit, and we ensure that the progression planned into the scheme of work offers the children an increasing challenge as they move through the school.

We teach all of our RE by:

  • providing lively, challenging learning activities, including story, music, drama, using ICT, group and class discussion, which stimulate pupils’ mental and emotional development;
  • encountering visits and visitors from a range of faiths and beliefs;
  • developing key skills such as investigation and enquiry, communication, interpretation and evaluation; and
  • setting clear standards in knowledge, skills and understanding which are understood by pupils and lead to improvements in learning.

Impact

Our Religious education curriculum is for all of our children to have the opportunity to:

  • explore concepts.
  • explore opportunities for personal and spiritual development.
  • explore communal responses to issues.
  • to become responsible citizens.
